Alaska Information

The above map of Alaska superimposed on the lower 48 states IS TO SCALE. NOW you find out that those maps that you have been looking at all your life have been cheating. They shrunk Alaska to a smaller scale so that it will fit on the page with the rest of the maps.SURPRISE!

Alaska is as wide as the rest of the United States. The State originally had four or five different time zones because of the distance covered. But since the early 1980's all of Alaska has been on Alaska time, which is one hour behind Pacific time and one hour ahead of Hawaii time.

Alaska State Flag

The state flag was designed by 13 year old Benny Benson while living at the Jesse Lee Home in Seward Alaska. It shows the Big Dipper and North Star on a field of blue. The Stars are for Alaska being the northernmost state and the blue is for the state flower, the forget-me-not.

The main part of the state is roughly a square that measures 1,000 miles by 1,000 miles. In this square, we have one square mile of land for each person in the state (roughly 500,000 people). Alaskans could split Alaska in half and make Texas the third largest state! Alaska also has more coastline than the rest of the United States combined.

Alaska and Texas to scale

Only about one fourth of the State of Alaska is connected directly by road. The rest of the state is fly in or boat in. The Anchorage area is home to over half the state's 500,000 population. All shopping and services are available in Anchorage at such stores as COSTCO, Sam's Club, KMart, Wallmart, Fred Meyer. Flying in to Anchorage for shopping or medical care from "The Bush" is not unusual.

Hopefully this will give you a little idea of what it is like to live in Alaska and prepare you for your visit up here. We are very proud of our state and love to share it with others. There is plenty of it to go around! We just love showing visitors why we live here. You have to be in love with Alaska to stay. Either that or be crazy. It helps to be both, like us. Maybe some of that craziness and some of that love of Alaska will rub off on you when you are up here. See you soon!
